The story of Rigoletto in Harkstede, where CoHorse “lives,” is coming to an end...
It is no longer feasible for the owner to continue.
Not just financially (which, of course, was the primary reason CoHorse was founded in the first place), it is also taking too heavy a toll on her health.
After trying everything (and more), the curtain falls....
Of course, that was a shock, and we were all overcome with sadness…now what?
Zoeloe and Casper are going to a private home, where they’ll be able to grow old in peace.
For me personally, the next thought came in all caps and exclamation points:
What will happen to Simon and Adam?
Once the panic and tears subsided, one thing became clear: I can’t just let them disappear from my life.
But two horses… that’s a lot of horse! (and they’re not exactly two little Shetland ponies)
They’ve been together their whole lives, and they are incredibly attached, more so than most horses.
Simon is a very sweet, reliable riding horse.
But… Adam has been struggling with hoofcanker for years, which makes him virtually unsellable and unadoptable.
The idea that they might have to be separated broke my heart into a thousand pieces…
I just started treating Adam a month ago, using a holistic approach (I’ll write more about that later), and I wanted so, so badly to have a year to see what I could do for him.
Give me one year!
And after a week of thinking, puzzling, despair, and hope, yesterday I decided to ask the dreaded nerve-wracking question:
“How much would it cost to buy them both?”
And to my enormous relief, it was within the amount I'd already decided I could afford.
I’m getting my year.
And much more importantly: Adam is getting his year!
And as for how his health will be in a year, we’ll see… we’re going to do everything we can!
Never ever could I have imagined that CoHorse would come to revolve around Adam, but he is exactly why CoHorse exists.
I hope with all my heart that you’ll help out with all the juggling and improvisation that will be necessary.
It all started with one horse.
When an older riding school horse was injured, she could no longer earn a living.
But some horses are more than just riding school horses.
They’re family.
Thanks to the help of many people, two inseparable horses were able to stay together.
When one of them passed away, the other found a new companion.
Two older horses who, after years of loyal service, no longer have anything to prove and are simply allowed to be horses.
That’s why CoHorse exists.
To give horses who have been there for others for years a dignified retirement, and to support the stables that offer them a safe home when needed.
Sometimes something big starts with nothing more than the desire to keep two friends together.
CoHorse is a private initiative aimed at making this support a permanent part of our operations.
We do this in various ways, because it simply works better when we’re not relying on just one source.
